Learning Objectives
Students know which phases African-Americans went through in gaining freedom in the USA up until now. Students will understand how segregation is still ongoing in the USA despite the Civil Rights Act and moreover, how segregation seems to be increasing. Also, students can relate the novels to the social situation of the United States at this moment.
Assignment:
To get you started on this lesson, you need to know what re-segregation means. Find out and then explain the term in your own words.
You might think that African-Americans are equal to white Americans now, but this is not the case. Watch the video and answer the following questions:
1) According to researchers, what are the advantages of mixed schools?
2) What causes re-segregation according to the speakers in the video?
3) How do you feel about what D'leisha Dent says about her future? How does that influence re-segregation according to you?
4) D'Leisha's grandfather also appears in the video. How do you think he feels about re-segregation? Include the knowledge you gained in previous lessons to support your answer.
